“Bovine Leukosis Virus”
- A retrovirus that targets lymphocytes
- Does not have clinical signs in most cattle, however 1-5% will develop lymphosarcomas which may cause enlarged lymph nodes, paralysis of hind limbs, weight loss and protruding eyeballs
- Direct loss to producers may include, loss of life, cost of replacement, reduced reproduction and inability to export due to increased BLV control programs.
- Primarily transmitted by blood. Use of common needles during vaccinations and possible rectal palpations may play a significant part in BLV contamination.
